The general objective of SANePLAN project is improving sanitation management through the development and demonstration of an information system that integrates sanitation with urbann planning, on a limited and defined settings. As well, the project involves the integration thus all elements of sanitation (both water networks and water treatment facilities) with urban planning, considering the involvement of multiple actors and territories, allowing the dimensioning and planning according to current needs and future prospects under economical conditions, environmental protection, population and climate change.

Under the guidelines of this general objective, the specific objectives of the project are the following:

  • In relation to the European Water Framework (Dir. 2000/60/CE), the project will contribute to the reduction of the pressure on water bodies
  • Relative to the Directive 91/271/EEC, concerning Urban Waste Water Treatment, SANePLAN will help to improve the adequacy of sanitation systems in localities
  • Regarding the Directive 2003/4/EC (Aarhus), the project will contribute to the development of transparent governance systems in relation to environmental information
  • Moreover, SANePLAN project will contribute to the development of the White Paper on Adapting to Climate Change (COM 2009/147)
  • The project will also contribute to the 2007/2/EC Directive (INSPIRE) in order to be consistent with it
  • Rationalize the management costs of sanitation, promoting its joint management and operation

Finally, the following additional objectives are laid down:

  • In relation to the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC, SANePLAN will provide information for the assessment of the seawater bodies status.
  • Regarding the Directive 2008/114/EC on the identification and designation of European critical infrastructures, in the water section, the project will help to provide information of risk events generation through sanitation systems.
